On Sunday 4th October we have been filming for the video clip of my song City of Secrets (iTunes), the song I wrote for Hollywood author Patrice Chaplin. The “we” in this case is Director John Nieland, Producer and Camera guy Dennis von Ende, a small crew and myself. This video clip will have its world premiere on the Gardiners World TV show on SKY Controversial TV that is dedicated to my work and which will be broadcasted in about 6 week’s time in the UK and later in the US. I was filmed singing, wandering the busy Sunday streets on several locations in the heart of Amsterdam. John is a man with enormous drive and energy. He also had a very clear vision of what the clip needed to look like. Dennis was the perfect guy to put it on camera. Calm and patient, with a rare love for detail. Even though this was their first project together, it felt like we had been working together for a long time.

This experience was a first for me in many respects. Not only is it the first video clip I have ever made, it was also the first time that I presented myself so directly and closely to the public, singing and with some bits of dancing. In the clip, we try to capture the lively big city atmosphere of Amsterdam. We have been filming in HQ cinema format, which will be edited into a moody black&white. During the edit we will also use scenes from Patrice Chaplin’s 1987 Hollywood movie Siesta. Together the images will tell the story of unanswered love which is the theme of the song. I hope the video will truly echo the desolation, the big city atmosphere and the interaction I have had with the public.

I could never have realized this video without the tremendous help and support of the Dutch Camera College. Run by veteran cameraman Maurice Bossers, this institute specializes in training people in the media and television industry to the highest production standards. Maurice will be responsible for editing the video clip. His is the gargantuan task of ploughing through the more than 3,5 hours of video and make it into an apple pie. I am very happy that I can draw on his long experience and creativity. The clip will be ready for screenings around coming weekend. I can’t wait.
Zondag 4 oktober hebben we gefilmd voor de video clip van mijn song City of Secrets (iTunes), de song die ik schreef voor Hollywood auteur Patrice Chaplin. De “we” in dit geval zijn mijn regisseur John Nieland, Producer/Cameraman Dennis von Ende, een kleine crew en ik zei de gek. De video clip wordt onderdeel van de aan mijn werk gewijde TV Show op SKY Controversial TV, die over een week of 6 wordt uitgezonden in Engeland en later in de Verenigde Staten. Ik ben zingend gefilmd, al slenterend door het drukke zondagse hartje Amsterdam in de vroege herfst. John is een man met enorm veel drive en energie. Hij had ook een hele duidelijk visie over wat voor clip dit moest worden. Dennis was perfect als cameraman. Kalm, geduldig en met een zeldzaam oog voor details. Hoewel dit hun eerste project samen was, voelde het alsof we al heel lang hadden samengewerkt.

Dit was de eerste keer voor mij in veel opzichten. Het is niet alleen de eerste keer dat ik een video clip maak, het was ook de eerste keer dat ik zo dichtbij en zo direct als artiest in contact trad met een wildvreemd publiek in het drukke Amsterdam. We hebben gedraaid in High Quailty Cinema formaat om de clip zo ‘filmisch’ mogelijk te maken. Tijdens het monteren maken we er vervolgens een gruizig en groezelig zwart-wit van. Tijdens de montage worden ook de scenes van Patrice Chaplin’s 1987 Hollywood film Siesta toegevoegd. Samen met de beelden die we hebben geschoten vertellen we het verhaal van onbeantwoorde liefde waar het liedje over gaat. Ik hoop dat de video echt de vervreemding en wanhoop, de sfeer van de grote stad en mijn interactie met het publiek zal laten zien.

Dit was nooit en te nimmer gelukt zonder de geweldige hulp en ondersteuning van het Camera College in Bergen op Zoom. Dit opleidingsinstituut wordt gerund door camera veteraan Maurice Bossers en biedt media en televisie produktie trainingen aan van het allerhoogste niveau. Maurice was eerder verantwoordelijk voor de video clips van Doe Maar zanger/toetsenist Ernst Jansz. Maurice doet persoonlijk de montage voor de clip. Aan hem de taak om door de ruim 3,5 uur materiaal heen te ploegen en er kaas van te maken. Ik ben blij dat ik gebruik kan maken van zijn enorme expertise en niet te vergeten creativiteit op dit vlak. De eerste versie van de clip is waarschijnlijk eind deze week al klaar. Ik ben ontzettend benieuwd hoe dat er eruit gaat zien.
