With the Press Release out it’s time to drop the charade.
My new single is called The Book of Love, after the bestselling novel of the same name by the American author Kathleen McGowan. Kathleen is an internationally acclaimed author who has sold millions of copies of her books in 60 languages and who is a frequent guest on the American news shows. Kathleen is a phenomenon. I had the privilege to talk to Kathleen on Skype during an interview for my Internet Podcasting Station Radio Rennessence in February of this year. My Rennessence colleagues Filip Coppens, Andrew Gough and myself were really impressed by Kathleen’s deep knowledge of the early European history, its mysteries and the way she knitted everything together into a coherent logical story. I had already read her previous book The Expected One and the sequel to that The Book of Love was about to come out. After the interview we hooked up on Facebook and Kathleen sent me a copy of her book to read.
What I read in the Book of Love simply blew me away. The Expected One was a good book but this one was formidable. Without giving away the entire plot, she pieces together the life of Mathilda of Tuscany who allegedly owned a copy of the Libro Rosso, containing a gospel written by Christ himself and given to his alleged spouse Mary-Magdalene. Now from my extensive research into and around the Mystery of Rennes-le-Château I know many of the legends and tales recounting how Mary-Magdalene set foot in southern France after the crucifixion. I am not a religious man. I am from the school of “there-must-be-something-ism”. I do however have an endless fascination for the true history of Christianity that I share with Kathleen. The book is highly recommended to anyone who likes a great story based on actual facts. The novel format Kathleen uses makes for a fantastically compelling and entertaining story that has everything a great tale needs. Love, hate, intrigue, heroes and enemies. All this against a meticulously painted historical backdrop. It grabbed me like no book had done before.
For a long time I had the idea to do a concept-album around a mystery theme. A way for me to do an English album and to create a crossover between my activities as a Mystery Researcher and as a Recording Artist. At the same time I thought the whole thing would feel too manufactured as a concept and never really made a start. That is until after I met Kathleen. We met up in May in Bruges (Belgium), where Kathleen was attending the procession of the Holy Blood with some friends and some fellow researchers. Much to my regret I couldn’t join her on the rest of her trip through Europe as my business called me elsewhere. It was then that I decided I had to do something with this new energy I had found and proposed to do a song around The Book of Love and its predecessor. She loved the idea. It took a while to find the time to write but when I started, I finished the song in no time at all.
My song The Book of Love is about Love with a capital L. It tells of Mary-Magdalene, the woman who fell in love with the Man who knew he wouldn’t get very old and intended to die for the salvation of everybody else. The bitter irony in that is beating me senseless. She took his legacy, his ideas and allegedly his gospel to Europe and continued his work in the name of love. Now whether you are a believer or not, whether you believe that Jesus and Mary-Magdalene were in love, engaged, married, a mum-and-dad or not: it is one hell, or should I say heaven of a story.
I am very proud to say that Kathleen loves the song. She actively participated in getting the lyrics just right and is looking for ways to get it to the attention of her readers. She authorized me to use the title of her book so we could really link up our works.
Needless to say that I feel enormously privileged to have been given this opportunity, being an obscure Dutch artist with an inpronouncable name (try “Coriander Wrath”and you’ll be 95% there 
. The fact that I can link my song to the monumental work of an internationally famous writer feels quite unreal at times but when I woke up this morning it was still there so here I am.

Nu de persrelease er uit is kan ik wat meer vertellen over mijn nieuwe single.
De nieuwe single heet The Book of Love, naar de gelijknamige bestseller roman van de Amerikaanse auteur Kathleen McGowan. Ze is een internationaal beroemde schrijfster die miljoenen boeken heeft verkocht in 60 talen en die een vaste bezoekster is geworden in de Amerikaanse nieuwsshows. Kathleen is een fenomeen. Ik had het voorrecht om haar te kunnen interviewen voor mijn internet podcast station Radio Rennessence in februari van dit jaar. Mijn interview collega’s Filip Coppens, Andrew Gough en ik waren erg onder de indruk van Kathleen’s diepe kennis van de vroege historie van Europa, haar mysteries en de manier waarop ze de feiten aan elkaar knoopte en tot logische conclusies kwam. Ik had haar eerste boek The Expected One (In NL verschenen onder de naam Het Magdalena Mysterie) al gelezen en het vervolg op dat boek The Book of Love (Het Jezus Mysterie) zat eraan te komen. Na het interview voegden we elkaar toe op Facebook en Kathleen stuurde me een schitterende uitgave van haar nieuwe boek om te lezen.
Wat ik las in The Book of Love maakte diepe indruk op me. The Expected One was een prima boek maar dit boek was formidabel. Zonder de hele plot weg te geven: Kathleen sprokkelt het leven bij elkaar van Mathilde van Toscane, de enigmatische vrouw die als enige niet-man begraven ligt in de St. Pieter in Rome. Mathilde bezat volgens de overlevering een rood leren boek (Libro Rosso) wat een evangelie bevatte geschreven door Jezus wat na diens dood mee naar Frankrijk werd genomen door zijn geliefde Maria-Magdalena. Door mijn uitgebreide onderzoek naar het Mysterie van Rennes-le-Château ken ik de meeste van de folklore en legendes die vertellen hoe Maria-Magdalena voet aan wal zette in Zuid-Frankrijk na de kruisiging. Ik ben niet religieus. Ik heilig meer het “there-must-be-something-ism” (er-moet-iets-zijn-isme in goed nederlands). Wat ik deel met Kathleen is een eindeloze nieuwsgierigheid naar de ware geschiedenis van het Christendom. Ik beveel het boek van harte aan, aan iedereen die van een goed verhaal houdt wat ergens is gebaseerd op feiten. Het roman formaat wat ze gebruikt maakt het mogelijk om een prachtig onderhoudend verhaal te weven dat alles heeft wat een sprookje fantastisch maakt: liefde, haat, intrigues, helden en vijanden. Dit alles tegen een prachtig beschreven historische achtergrond. Dit boek had me goed te pakken.
Al lange tijd had ik het idee om een concept album te gaan maken rond een mysterie thema. Het zou een manier zijn om een Engelstalig album te maken waarmee ik een groter publiek zou kunnen bereiken en het zou een mooie brug slaan tussen mijn activiteiten als mysterie onderzoeker en die als singer/songwriter. Maak van twee tijdverslindende hobbies één of zoiets. Tegelijkertijd had ik altijd het gevoel dat zo’n project al snel geforceerd over zou komen en het nooit echt zou werken. Dat is dus tot ik Kathleen McGowan ontmoette. We ontmoetten elkaar persoonlijk met Hemelvaart 2009 in Brugge waar ze Bloedprocessie bijwoonde met wat vrienden en collega onderzoekers. Tot mijn grote spijt kon ik haar niet vergezellen op haar reis verder door Europa omdat ik voor de zaak elders moest zijn. Op dat moment besloot ik dat ik iets moest met deze nieuwe energie en ik stelde voor om een song te schrijven rondom The Book of Love en The Expected One. Ze vond het een schitterend idee. Het duurde even voor ik de tijd had gevonden om te gaan schrijven maar toen ik eenmaal zat was het zo gepiept. Deze song schreef zichzelf.
Mijn single The Book of Love gaat over Liefde met een hoofdletter L. Hij gaat over Maria-Magdalena, de vrouw die verliefd werd op de man die al wist dat hij niet oud zou worden omdat hij ging sterven voor alle andere mensen. De ironie daarvan slaat me om de oren. De vrouw ging echter niet bij de pakken neerzitten maar nam zijn gedachtengoed en volgens de legende zijn boek mee naar Zuid-Frankrijk waar ze het verder verspreidde. Of je nu gelovig bent of niet, of je nu gelooft dat Jezus en Maria-Magdalena getrouwd waren of niet: dit is een geweldig mooi verhal wat mij inspireerde om er wat mee te doen.
Ik ben er heel trots op dat Kathleen het een prachtig liedje vindt. She hielp actief om de tekst precies goed te krijgen en zoekt naar manieren om de song onder de aandacht van haar lezers te brengen. Ze autoriseerde me om de titel van haar boek te gebruiken zodat we echt een band tussen onze werken konden creëeren.
Nodeloos om te melden dat ik mij ontzettend bevoorrecht voel dat ik deze kans krijg. Ik ben een obscure Nederlandse artiest met een onuitspreekbare naam (het dichtst bij komt volgens mij “Coriander Wrath” en zoek dat maar eens op in het engelse woordenboek….). Het feit dat ik mijn song aan het monumentale werk van een internationale gelauwerde schrijver kan en mag verbinden voelt soms nog wat onwerkelijk aan. Toen ik vanochtend wakker werd was dat echter nog steeds het geval dus hier ben ik dan.
